Listen to Dr. Vliet On:

An Independent Physician’s Rebuttal

to Democrats “Protecting” Medicare

By: Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D.

Democrats are not“protecting” Medicare as claimed in recent articles in support of various campaigns.

Democrats, in fact, have eviscerated Medicare.  Medicare was stabbed to death with $500 to $800 BILLION dollars in budget cuts for Seniors when the new healthcare law was signed in 2010.  Dollars cut from Medicare have been shifted to expand Medicaid and provide services for younger voters.

A local Democrat candidate said this is just “excess” money in the Medicare budget.  Who is kidding whom? Cutting 500-800 BILLION over the next decade would be the same as saying you are going to cut ALL Medicare to ALL recipients for 18 months.  Seniors are smart enough to know that you cannot have the same level of medical services with such draconian budget cuts.

In the dark of night, in back room deals, with coercion and single party control, the Democrats rammed through Congress the ironically named “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” or PPACA, in March 2010.  Known widely now as “Obamacare,” PPACA is neither protective of patients, nor affordable.

Democrats created the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). Beginning in 2014, the 15 unelected, Democrat-appointed members on this board will determine what therapies, procedures, tests, and medications will be covered by Medicare and therefore allowed for both Medicare patients and people covered under non-Medicare insurance offered through the government–run exchanges.

The decisions of the IPAB are not subject to Congressional oversight or judicial review.  You have NO appeal.  IPAB’s job is to cuts costs by cutting medical services. Democrat-appointed bureaucrats have already cut back on preventive medical screenings, such as PSA for prostate cancer and tests for breast cancer.

Democrat-appointed bureaucrats have already begun reducing approvals for hospital re-admissions for the same illness within 30 days of discharge, reducing CTs and MRIs, reducing back surgeries, reducing hip and knee replacements.  Does this sound like “patient protection?”

The Democrats have reduced access to medical care by drastically reducing Medicare payments for care by doctors and hospitals.  Even Medicare’s Chief Actuary, Richard Foster, said these cuts mean 30-40% of hospitals would have to close by 2030.  Does this sound like patient protection?

Even lower payments to doctors, already well below the costs of delivering care and propped up by privately insured patients, mean thousands more doctors will stop taking new Medicare patients.  Want to pay for your own care?  Private contracting is jeopardized under the new intrusive compliance regulations in Obamacare.  Does this sound like “patient protection?”

The Democrat’s “affordable” care act has imposed new taxes on recipients, such as the tax on investment income, new taxes on medical devices, new taxes on medications.  How is this increase in cost, passed on to Seniors, “affordable” for people on fixed incomes?

Democrats slashed Medicare Advantage, the privately run, most popular and most affordable Medicare Plan of all.  National studies show that Medicare Advantage is the plan most often chosen by low-income seniors, particularly Hispanics and African-Americans. Seniors give Medicare Advantage high marks on coordination of care between primary care and specialists.  The

Democrats gutted this popular program because they wanted everything controlled by the federal government, without any component being run by private insurance companies.

Democrats claim they “closed the “doughnut” hole.  This has lured Seniors into a false sense of security – what has actually happened is drug shortages of critical medicines.  You may not have to pay for it, but you if you can’t get what you need when you need it, how does that help “protect” patients? In reality, it may jeopardize your life.

Democrats claim that Obamacare will cut the national deficit.  That’s another lie.  Obamacare double counts fictional savings.  The actual federal deficit would increase by up to $530 billion over the next 10 years, according to a meticulous study of PPACA’s spending and revenue projections by Charles Blahous of the Mercatus Center.

The upcoming elections for our representatives to Congress and our President provide a stark contrast in choices: The Democrats have already failed to protect Medicare.

Democrats may be protecting Medicare bureaucrats.  They are most certainly not protecting Medicare patients.

This election season, your VOTE may determine the fate of your LIFE

Don’t fall for platitudes.  Use your common sense.  The Democrats’ 2010 healthcare law has already cut Medicare budgets, increased taxes on drugs and medical devices, increased taxes on your investment income, and caused local physicians to stop taking Medicare patients.

The Democrats have already killed Medicare as we have known it, and changed it forever.  Do not elect a Democrat who prides himself on getting Obamacare passed.

As an Independent, I have endorsed Republicans for their sound proposals to not only save Medicare, but also to expand patient options and patient choices for insurance coverage AND medical treatment.
